Review: Biostar TA890GXE

The biostar ta890gxe is the best board you can buy if you're on a budget but want to leverage on a whole new level of performance with sata 6gbps interface. Armed with amd's 890gx chipset, the ta890gxe allows you to run your phenom ii, athlon ii and any of the future amd processors, as long as they are of the am3 socket. Additionally, this motherboard supports the newest phenom ii x6 hexa core processors too. This motherboard is in a micro atx form factor and it is able to fit in any micro atx slim towers, making the board suitable for a home theatre pc as well. Another point to take note, I just said about a home theatre pc: with integrated ati 4290 graphics onboard, there isn't a need to get an extra graphics card to provide an video out to your tv as well. With a hdmi output, you're also able to get audio off your hdmi cable to your big screen television at home, just by one simple cable that transmit both your video and audio signal. Ati avivo technology with the 4290 will ensure that the image produced on your screen will be corrected and appear brighter and clearer. Together with ati stream technology, instead of rendering videos in hours inefficiently on the CPU, you can now do it efficiently on the gpu ( or the integrated igp in this case) without much stress on the CPU and finish rendering in minutes. That is what is all about ati fusion. Using an amd CPU with an ati graphics core. You'll get unbeatable performance for the price compared to competitors on the blue and green team. With ati hybrid crossfirex technology, adding on a hd5450 or 3200,4200 graphics card on your system will give 2x the performance on your igp. Certainly a plus points not only for this motherboard, but all the other boards that has hybrid crossfire technology with them. I give a thumbs up for ati and amd for such technology. Provided with this motherboard is a free home theatre remote. You now realise how much biostar wants you to use their board for a home theatre pc.

Talking about the board itself, it is a tad bit disappointing that biostar left out usb3.0 support as well as another pci-e x16 slot for you to support for crossfirex. However, the availability of a pci-e x1 slot on the board solves the problem. You can add on a usb3.0 expansion card on that slot to move on to an ultimate future proof computer system that can last you for years.

I'll talk a little about the features that the board is equipped with, with the innovation by biostar.

1) bio unlocker enables you to unlock you phenom ii dual cores into tri or quad core. Why was this extra feature so significant? Isn't it the same as advanced clock calibration? You need to know that amd left out advanced clock calibration feature for the new 8xx series of chipset. It is left to third party controllers to enable the extra cores or l3 cache on these amd processors. Biostar named it bio unlocker, and unlocking and unleashing ultimate performance of your processor is as easy as a few press of the keyboard into your BIOS settings.

2)GTO63
Ultimate automatic overclocking feature that pushes your phenom II x6 to its limits

3)BIOSTAR "GPU" Technology

BIOSTAR G.P.U (Green Power Utility) is a new function, it will enhance energy efficiency by disabling extra phases while CPU on light loading. It integrated a friendly GUI to monitor what's your CPU resourcing, response and optimized the power saving on your system. Such as Heavy 3D Gaming, Internet or MSN charting, G.P.U will always arrange the best power efficiency in your system.

Review: Asus Ares

I got my chance to get hold on one of the 1000 limited edition Asus Ares available in the world. I believe that this is the first card to reach our tiny island shores (Singapore). Featuring a dual GPU solution, this card possesses two 5870 GPUs to provide ultimate performance for games. In fact it is the fastest graphics card on the market (actually not yet in the market at this point of time when the video is made) right now, even faster than the Nvidia GTX 480 as well as the ATI 5970. The 5970 is a dual GPU feature a GPU clocked between the 5850 and 5870, while Asus Ares is equipped with a full 5870 gpu. That also explains the high power requirements featured by 2 8pin PCI-e connector and a 6pin PCI-e connector.

This card boast airflow 600% more than the actual factory design of the 5970, performing 32% faster than a reference 5970. Despite the fact of a higher airflow, the high quality fan produces less noise than the reference 5970 at only 37dB, compared to 5970 at 44.5dB.This is a graphics card on drugs. 4GB of Super speed GDDR5 memory supersedes the entire range of high end graphics card on the market, undoubtedly the best graphics card on the market, scoring 15473 on graphics score while the 5970 only scored 11506.

Ladies and Gentlemen, may I present you with the Asus Ares, a Dual 5870 graphics card.

Review: Asus M4A88TD-V EVO USB3

The Asus M4A88TD-V EVO USB3 is for someone who wants to be future proof, yet restricted by budget. When you go AMD, you are generally regarded as an AMD fanboy, or you know that AMD provides better value to Intel or you know that ATI and AMD goes well together.

AMD 880G Chipset
AMD SB850 Southbridge Chipset
EPU(energy saving processor)
Core unlocker
Turbo V key

THIS BOARD HAS ANTI SURGE PROTECTION! This is a really cool feature and one of a kind with innovation from ASUS.

Highly recommended that you pair this motherboard with an ATI graphics card because you can run Hybrid Crossfire on this motherboard with a 34XX series card.

Review: Cooler Master Elite 370 Mid tower Case

This is a pretty new case just released last week and I've got my hands on them. Introducing Cooler Master Elite 370 Mid Tower Case, this case is the choice for your new computer build if you want the full features of a computer case and also at a price deemed affordable.

Black front glossy panel brings out the futuristic looks of the case, together with the side window that you get, you can definitely show off your expensive hardware inside to people around you. You can't really get a case with a side panel at this price. The Cooler Master Elite 370 Mid tower Case is certainly a case worth noticing.

It supports 1 140mm fan at the front for intake, 2 140mm fan at the top for exhaust, 1 120mm at the back(provided) for exhaust and 1 140mm at the bottom for intake.

Tooless drive bays designs ensure system builders will get their build done in not time at all.

Support for 2.5" HDD and SSD- Also using the tooless design. You need not buy any adapter for your SSDs now.

7 Expansion slots for you expansion cards.

Bottom Mounted PSU ensures that cable management looks neater.

Overall, I would give this case a 4/5 for the perfect price for a good steel made chassis. I would have preferred a black interior instead. But for this price, there is nothing much you will want to ask for.

GOOD VALUE!

Best value Quad core processor. Review: AMD Athlon II x4 -635

AMD was the first to introduce processors that are based on the x64 instruction sets. Now that 64bit computing has become mainstream, both intel and AMD are working hard to provide their consumers with the best CPU available. What do i think about AMD? I believe that comparing both AMD and Intel, Intel is like your branded goods while AMD is like your normal goods. Intel sells things more expensive than AMD that is a fact, but AMD can certainly provide some extra features on their chips as well.

Introducing the AMD Athlon II x4-635 this 2.9GHz processor is actually a quad core processor that can perform as well as Intel's corei5 750 cpu at half the price! Besides that, the possibilities of unlocking this processor into a more powerful phenom ii series just by using amd chipsets of 710 and above and wada! You can a phenom ii x4 at the price of an Athlon II with that L3 cache unlocked!

No matter what. I have to insist that you get this processor if you really want value.

Forget about the brands. A computer is just a box that contains hardware. You want something cheap and powerful. Go AMD.

Review: ECS A785GM-M5

What else can you expect? ECS A785GM-M5 is the only choice you can make if you're really on a budget but yet still get quality chipset from AMD.

ECS is actually a mainboard manufacturer more as an OEM brand. They make boards for different companies just like how foxconn makes chips for apple and dell. However, foxconn don't brand their own motherboard. ECS does. Today, we have the A785GM-M5 from ECS, and let us take a look at what really makes this board worthwhile to buy.

Firstly, it uses an AMD 785g chipset. That means you're good to go without a discrete graphics card. Integrated 4250 ain't that powerful compared to a beefy 4850, but can certainly meet the expectations of your normal video playback, youtube video watching, word processing, powerpoint creation and things like that. A certain must go if you're planning to build a home theatre PC. The competitor chipset from Intel, the corei3 and corei5 with integrated graphics on the processor core itself is too expensive. I'll still stick to the 785g chipset no matter what. Add on an athlon ii x4 for superior price to performance ratio. You're good to go.

Next, is the pricing. If you plan to use this as an home theatre pc, there is no need for a very high end system. This motherboard is the cheapest on the list of all the motherboards available on the market(as of the date I bought the motherboard). Besides, you need to think about the components that fits into the motherboard as well. DDR2 Dimm slots compared to the newer DDR3 are preferred because they are cheaper.

With an inclusion of a pci-e x16 certainly allows you to upgrade your graphics solution in the future if there is a need. Besides, hybrid crossfire is enabled on this motherboard. Just add on a compatible graphics card to the pci-e x16 slot to have a gpu performance level up with both the integrated graphics chip as well as your discrete graphics chip. It saves a lot more electricity as well(because of the technology of hybrid crossfire).

This whole motherboard is a very simple and micro atx which is certainly a board worth considering when building your hometheatre pc.

Preview:ROG Xpander from ASUS

Sad that your Asus Rampage III Extreme can't support 4 Way SLI? Or is the x58 chipset bandwidth for pci-e not fast enough for 4 of your GTX480?

Take a look at the new ROG Xpander for your ROG series motherboard, currently only compatible with rampage III extreme.

Equipped with 2 NF200 to meet up your full bandwidth of PCI-e to enable full support for quad SLI
4x GTX 480 in SLI

2 extra 4 pin molex connectors are required to power the whole add on board. It also provides an overall more stable system to your SLI setup

Put the whole add on board on top of your 2 PCI-e x16 on the actual Rampage III Extreme to add on extra 2 PCI-e x16 for your whole system.

An extra fan gives your whole system an better airflow, especially when 4x SLI could increase the heat of your system quite significantly.

Overall, this add on board is a one of a kind. I've never seen anything alike, and thumbs up to Asus for this innovation once again.

Review: Asus M4A89TD PRO

You're looking at the Asus M4A89TD PRO Motherboard.

This motherboard features the new AMD 890fx and SB850 chipset. Yes. This means that SATA 6Gbps is finally native on the chipset itself, overcoming possible bottlenecks that were once a problem on the P55 chipset.
Based on ASUS naming system, I'll have to emphasize that this is ASUS M4A89TD model and not M4A89GTD model. There is a significant different between these 2 models, with M4A89TD equipped with enthusiast based 890fx chipset while M4A89GTD is on the mainstream 890gx chipset. I had always thought that Asus sent me a GTD model until I saw on the motherboard box that this motherboard is with a 890fx chipset, then I realised that it was a higher end model of motherboard that I am reviewing. Anyway, here are some of the features that Asus M4A89TD has.890fx Chipset supports all AM3 processors including Phenom II and Athlon II, including the new 6 core AMD Phenom II x6(This motherboard has support for it. the thuban core CPUs) It supports up to CPU TDP of 140W. That means all the AM3 AMD processors out there are supported.Allow me to introduce you the TurboV EVO processor that is indeed a unique feature compared to the other vendors out there in the market. TurboV processor is exclusive to Asus and is a innovation by them.
"TurboV EVO processor is a highly specialized micro-processor on the motherboard that makes
overclocking easier and more rewarding. Together with ASUS’s unique Auto Tuning option inside TurboV EVO application and OC Tune option in BIOS as the trigger to this processor, it intelligently tunes the system to a high performance yet stable state based on the potential of the components installed. Unlike other vendor solutions of using limited preset profiles, this intelligent processor is capable of fine-tuning the system performance with extreme flexibility. Users can choose to make a start, and leave the rest for the TurboV EVO processor to complete, or the other way around, all up to the well of users, without the need to change mode or save settings."
The inclusion of Turbo V processor, a controller onboard M4A89TD gives the motherboard a number of premium features such as core unlocker, turbo key tool, which allows this motherboard to stand out from competitors. Introduction of each various features will be done in the next section.

1.Asus Core Unlocker Technology
Firstly, I believe that many people are aware that AMD processors are able to unlock extra cores to boost the whole system performance. This feature was enabled with AMD's ACC(Advanced Calibration Clock) feature on the SB710 and SB750 chipset. However, not many know that ACC feature was actually left out in the newer generations of chipsets from AMD, namely SB850. This have led to motherboard manufacturers like Asus to look out for other alternatives to ensure that cores from AMD CPUs do unlock as well from the newer boards. Asus have always been an innovating company. In fact, there are a higher number of researchers working in Asus compared to the number of people actually doing sales work, technical production and so on. Core Unlocker is a brainchild of Asus. Asus was the first to implement such features to replace ACC. Other motherboard manufacturers simply copied it off. Of course, I am certain that you will get the best unlocking experience from the Asus Core unlocker feature and ensure that your system is stable and running as it should be with multiple cores unlocked.
Unlocking is just as simple as pushing a a switch to enable the TurboV controller on board and the controller will scan for all hidden cores and caches, and unlock only the working ones for the user.

2.Turbo Key Tool
Similar to other motherboard that Asus manufactured, the Turbo Key tool allows automatic overclocking of the CPU to the highest possible frequency with a certain voltage determined by TurboV controller itself. Switching the feature on is similar to switching core unlocker on: with a switch on board.Honestly speaking, I find that the Turbo Key Tool not only allows you to automatically overclock your processor, but at the same time, Novice manual overclockers can use the clocks and voltages provided by the turbo key tool as a reference for a higher clock done manually for the system. It is reliable to use it as reference because Asus ensures that the system is still stable after switching turbo key tool on.

3. MemOK
This button on the motherboard allows your system to boot and POST even though there may be some compatibility issues with the RAM. MemOK will do a self memory patching process and resolve compatibility issues until the system is able to boot.

4.New Generation EPU(energy processing unit)

software to configure EPU(included in Driver CD)

The EPU aims to save electricity by providing stable and clean current flowing through the whole system, and at the same time providing stability to the system. It is an energy saving feature. It also ensures a higher power efficiency.

4.Power eSATA support
At the back IO ports, there is a eSATA USB2.0 combo. eSATA transfers data 8 times faster than the conventional USB2.0. However, SATA does not bring power(electricity) to power up devices such as external hard drives and thumb drives. eSATA drives requires you to plug an extra USB to power the device and then additionally a eSATA cable to do the data transfer. With the Power eSATA support, your external device will be able to power up even without the extra USB cable because power is already delivered to it since the port is also a USB port as well. It certainly reduces hassle because all you need to do now is just plugging in the device and enjoy seamless transfer rates at 3Gbps.

5. Native SATA 6GbpsYes! You've got yourself futureproof with Native SATA 6Gbps. With new solid state drives using the new SATA6Gbps because their performance are surpassing the 3Gbps, thus bottlenecking the SATA 2.0 interface there is a need for an improvement in the SATA standard. SATA 6Gbps was introduced not long ago and the implementation of SATA 6Gbps to AMD SB850 will prevent bottlenecking. With transfer rates of up to 750MB/s theoretically, you can transfer a 4GB movie in less than 6 seconds!

An advice from me: Remember to use the SATA 6Gbps cables provided in the box. Only these cables will allow you to transfer files up to 750MB/s. There is a difference between SATA2.0 cables and SATA 6Gbps cables. Do make sure you know that! Also, make sure you buy those new SATA 6Gbps interface hard drives to make sure of compatibility. Take note that SATA 6Gbps is backwards compatible with SATA 2.0.
beefy heatsink at the VRM area

System builder's ease

1.Q-Shield(Asus's backplate)
Firstly, the IO shield is black, greatly improving the aesthetic appeals of the whole system looking from the back. Other than that, Q-shield cancels out Electromagnetic interference. It being padded also reduces vibrations and ensures that your system does not have that extra vibration noise commonly caused by backplates.

2.Q-ConnectorThis is a simple front panel connector adapter which allows you to just plug all the front panel switches onto it and then plug the whole connector onto the motherboard. Greatly reduces the hassle to plug each reset switch, on off switch, hdd led and power led front panel connectors one by one to the motherboard. I give Asus +1 for Q-connector invention.

3.Q-Dimm
This is actually the first time I've seen such a feature in motherboard. Normally, there will be 2 clips to hold each of your RAM dimm. Asus removed one of them because they saw that it is difficult to reach the clip especially with long graphics card like 5870,5890 and GTX480 which is blocking the clips. Now, all you need is to open on clip and pull your whole dimm out. As easy as that, instead of remove your whole graphics card just to get that RAM out.

4.Q-Slot
In order to reduce the difficulty of removing large VGA cards from PCI Express slots, while still being able to secure the card in place when been installed, Asus has developed the Universal PCI express slot with auto-lock and easy unlock capability. With the presence of Q-Slot, removing multiple large graphic cards no longer cause headaches no matter how big the cards are.

Comparing previous generation SB750 with the new SB 850

sb850

I have done a simple benchmark to show the improvements of the RAID 0 performances on my Solid State Drives comparing SB750 and SB850. Although improvements are not significant, with sata 6Gbps there will be great improvements once they become mainstream. Crystal Disk Mark and HDTune. Here are the results.

sb750

sb850

HD Tune Pro had shown that there was quite an improvement on SB850. On 512k read for SB750, there was a significant drop in the readings while for SB850, the graph remained high.

The results led to similar conclusion from Crystal Disk Mark. Crystal Disk Mark showed Higher Reads for all SB850, but there was some fluctuations for the write tests.

Core Unlocker Explored

With a flip of the core unlocker switch, I was able to unlock AMD Athlon II X4 620 with an L3 cache. An original 620 didn't have L3 Cache.

Asus also showed an example of unlocking the Phenom II X4 960T(this was an engineering sample) to a 6 core

Also, a test was done to compare with another board from Asus, the M4A88TD-EVO USB3. This was to show the prowess of the 890fx chipset, compared to the 880G chipset from the M4A88TD-EVO USB3

Price, SRP $339 SGD.

Overall, I will give the board a 3.5/5.0
I love the board because it uses the amd 890fx chipset, and with the great 890fx, an enthusiast platform can be built easily. However, the price is just not that right. I would have spent 50 dollar more just to get the Asus Crosshair IV formula, a better board from a even more premium series of motherboard from asus, Republic of Gamers Series which support quad crossfire. However, I will recommend this board to someone who intends to run a 5970 quad crossfire because the availability of only 2 pci-e x16. Another noticeable downside to this board is the arrangements of the expansion slots. It will be preferred to place the pci-e x1 as the first, instead of the second. This way, putting a dual slot graphics card will not cover the pci-e x1, normally for the sound card. However, the presence of the pci-e x4 solved the problem.
